William Sammy “Sam” Simmons, 88, of Leland, NC formerly of Virginia went to be with the Lord Friday April 9, 2021 at Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro NC. There will be no formal funeral service. A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of the late Taylor Preston and Clara Morris Simmons and had lived most of his life in Virginia. He was a retired employee of Safeway where he was a data processing manager. He also owned and operated his own lawn care business. Sam was an ordained Baptist minister and was a published author of “The Pen Is Mightier” and was a US Air Force veteran. Sam was preceded in death by three brothers: Vernon Simmons, Preston Simmons, and Fred Simmons, and five sisters: Margaret Perry, Mildred Gann, Virginia Housden, Betty Clark, and Barbara Brewer. He is survived by his wife : Elizabeth Shelton Simmons of the home, four sons: Steven Simmons (Sandy of Fredericksburg, VA, David Simmons (Rebecka) of Chesterfield, VA, Daniel Simmons (Vicky) of Midlothian, VA, and Frederick Simmons (Tracy) of Chester, VA, step-son: Daniel Andrew Riggs of Leland, NC, sister: Carol Simmons Dew of Monticello, NC, 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter.
