John Benton Moore peacefully made his transition from this life on July 1, 2025, surrounded by loved ones and taking with him a steadfast faith in an all-loving God as manifested in Jesus Christ. He lived his seventy years with kindness, humor and a deep love for his family and friends.
John was born in Reidsville, North Carolina in 1955 to Jess and Barbara Moore. From an early age, he enjoyed music and he was passionate about sports, especially his revered Tarheels. He attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill, where he graduated in 1979. He was a proud member of the Rams Club.
After college, John attended the University of Arkansas and earned a master’s in business administration. While in Arkansas, he met and fell in love with his beloved Stephanie Jean Nance. They married in 1982, and eventually settled in Tallahassee, Florida. There they raised their children, John Benton, Jr. and Claire. John worked as a manager at a local Cracker Barrel restaurant, and he and the family were active members at Timberlane Church of Christ.
Around 2010, John began experiencing serious health issues. That year his sister Carolyn gave him the gift of life by donating a kidney. John continued to have ongoing health concerns and retired early from his work. In 2015, he experienced a devastating loss with Stephanie’s unexpected death.
Shortly after Stephanie’s passing, John moved back to North Carolina. There he was blessed again with a loving life partner when he met Terri Moss Post. John and Terri had a joyful wedding in Disneyworld, Florida, and they celebrated their third anniversary on May 31. In the short time they had together, Terri was a loving and caring wife, and she and John enjoyed attending many sporting events, sampling new restaurants and spending time with family.
John’s loyalty and devotion to his family were remarkable. He was a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Gran.”
John is survived by Terri; his children John Benton Moore, Jr. (Melissa) and Bettye Claire Dangerfield (Spenser); stepdaughter Hailey Post (Keisei Sugahara); three grandchildren (Addy Dangerfield, Quinn Dangerfield and John David Moore); his mother Barbara Stacy Moore; his sisters Mary Moore (Bill Gowan) and Carolyn Moore (David Moon); his nephew Max Gowan; and a dozen close-knit first cousins.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to Lizzie Rhodes Shepherd, who last year made a second kidney donation possible for John.
A service celebrating John’s life will be held at the Northwest Church of Christ in Greensboro (6510 Old Oak Ridge Road) on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at 3:00 PM, with a reception to follow at the church. Citty Funeral Home is assisting the family during this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to a place that is special to them: Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, the beloved alma mater for both Stephanie and Claire.
