James Isaac “J.I” Smith, Jr. 78, of Caswell County, went to be with the Lord Wednesday September 8, 2021 at his home. Outside Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 P.M. Sunday September 12, 2021 at Concord Christian Church. Burial will be in the church Cemetery with law enforcement funeral honors provided by members of the Caswell, Alamance, and Rockingham County Sheriff’s Offices . Masks and social distancing are requested by the family. Anyone attending the service may bring a chair. The family will see friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. A native of Caswell County, J.I. was born October 25, 1942 to the late James I. Smith Sr. and the late Virginia Zimmerman Smith and had lived most of his life in Caswell County. He was a graduate of Anderson School and lived in Reidsville in his early years where he worked for the Reidsville Police Department. He moved back to Caswell County where he farmed for a few years and was elected Sheriff of Caswell County in 1978 where he served until his retirement in 2002. While Sheriff he served on numerous state and local boards and was the chairman of the NC Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission for many years. He was a charter member of the Cherry Grove Volunteer Fire Department and was a former member of the Cherry Grove Ruritan Club. J.I. loved going to the beach and was passionate about fishing. He was preceded in death by his son: Mark I. Smith and his sister: Jane S. McGee. Survivors include his wife of 38 years: Wanda Potter Smith of the home, daughters: Carla S. Watson (Derek) of Reidsville, Betty Smith, and Cynthia S. Wrenn (Joey) both of Elon, brother: Rev. Thomas H. Smith (Sarah) of Asheboro, NC, grandchildren: Madelyn Watson, Savannah Watson, Laura Steele (Patrick), and Will Wrenn (Brittany) , great grandchildren: Nolan Steele and Elliott Steele, and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
