Hugh Elmore Citty, 92, of Eden passed away Friday, April 24 at his home. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Joan Griggs ; his parents, Mary Alma Price and Russell G. Citty; his brothers, R. Price Citty, Robert B. Citty, Judson C. Citty, and John O. Citty; and his grandson Wills H. Citty.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Saturday May 16, 2026 at the Church of the Epiphany Columbarium 538 Henry St. Eden, NC with Chaplain Hunter Thompson and Rev. Lauren Sims-Salata officiating. A reception will be held at the residence following the service.
Hugh was a graduate of Reidsville High School, attended Elon College on an athletic scholarship, and earned his Master of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He coached the Morehead High School Basketball team in Eden to a state championship in 1966. He retired in 1996 as Dean of Industrial and Physical Education Departments at Rockingham Community College where he will be remembered for his advocacy of continuing education and health programs. In addition to basketball, Hugh taught golf, swimming, tennis, water safety instruction, and sports officiating.
Hugh is survived by his sons, Jonathan Derrick Citty and Ryke Griggs Citty (Kim), as well as granddaughter, Avery Ward (Mike), great-granddaughter, Sophia; and grandson, Rylan Citty. Hugh’s spouse equivalent, Margaret Petty, also survives. He leaves a host of former students and life-long friends to cherish his memory.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Citty Family Scholarship Fund at Rockingham Community College, 215 Wrenn Memorial Road, Wentworth, NC 27275
