Charlie Edward “Eddie” Oakes, Jr., 71, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00AM Tuesday, June 2, 2020, in Thompsonville Baptist Church with Military Rites by the Rockingham Co. Veteran’s Honor Guard. Due to the current conditions, attendees are encouraged to use social distancing and wear a mask. There will be no formal visitation but people may come to the funeral home and sign the register and express their sympathy.
A native of Burlington, Eddie was a son of the late Charlie Edward and Mary Frances Miles Oakes and had lived and worked in Pender Co. before moving back home to the Williamsburg Community 11 years ago. He was retired from Bell South, a US Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Thompsonville Baptist Church. Eddie was a former deacon at Riley’s Creek Bapt. Church and had served as assistant treasurer, a song leader, and member of the church choir at Thompsonville Baptist Church. He had also served on the playground committee and taught children’s church. Eddie had a deep love for his family, music, children, and he was an avid UNC Tar Heel fan.
Surviving is his wife of 42 years; Jean Rooks Oakes of the home, his daughter; Lindsey O. Meier of Reidsville, his son; Ryan Edward Oakes of Mebane, his sister; Nancy O. Watson (Harry) of Swansboro, his 4 grandchildren; Briana Meier, Cameron Rogers, Alex Oakes, and Conner Oakes.
Memorials may be made to the Charlie E. and Frances Miles Oakes Scholarship Fund at Thompsonville Baptist Church 2033 NC 87 Reidsville, NC 27320. Citty Funeral Home is assisting the Oakes Family.
