Susie White Obituary

Ruffin, NC

Susie Newnam White, 94, died peacefully on Saturday April 28, 2018 at her home, as she wished, with grace, courage and strength.

Susie was born on October 17, 1923 to the late Edgar and Beulah Newnam. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Worsham White, with whom she celebrated 48 years of marriage prior to his passing. Also preceding Susie were her brothers, Walter, Gaither, and George Newnam; and her sisters, Evelyn Watkins and Bluma Pryor.

Born in Caswell County, North Carolina, Susie grew up on her family’s farm in Pelham. As a child, Susie loved to spend time outdoors, and she especially enjoyed helping her father on the farm. From an early age, she learned the values of hard work, dedication and selflessness, all of which she came to exemplify. Susie completed her secondary education at Ruffin High School. She attended Averett College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she graduated with a degree in accounting. Thereafter, she moved to New York City, where she worked for IBM and enjoyed the rich culture of city life.

During a visit home to Caswell County in April 1951, Susie met her future husband, James White. They saw each other again while Susie was home for the Fourth of July. James traveled to New York to propose on Labor Day, and they were married on November 24, 1951. After their marriage, the couple made their home on the White Farm near Casville. Susie was not only a devoted wife and mother, but also a partner in her husband’s activities on their farm. She was much beloved by her children and grandchildren, as well as her friends in Caswell and beyond. Susie was an active member of Locust Hill United Methodist Church. She was devoted to her church and loved her church family.

Left to cherish Susie’s memory are her two daughters, Barbara Hagood (Scott) and Linda Vaughn (John); her granddaughters, Sarah Milton (Joseph), Elizabeth Prickett (Drew), Virginia Anne Adams (Bret), and Caroline Vaughn (fiancé, Dylan Myers); her great-grandchildren Anna Milton, Jack Milton and Bennett Adams, and many special nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Roy Fagan and Dr. Daniel Bensimhon for their years of devoted medical care and friendship. Special appreciation is extended to our friend, Peggie Farrish, who cared so attentively and lovingly for Susie. The family also wishes to acknowledge the excellent support and care of the nurses, aides, physician, social worker, and chaplain of Rockingham Hospice. Finally, the family is indebted to Susie’s friend and neighbor, J. D. Foster, for his many kindnesses throughout the years.
