Muriel Coward Schroeder was born February 28, 1929 to Alfred and Minnie Coward in Jericho, New York. With her older siblings, brother Alfred, and sisters, Frances, Ethel, and Alice, Muriel was raised on New York’s Long Island and in Dover and Randolph, New Jersey. As a child she was a member of 4-H, which set in motion her life-long love of animals and the environment.
“Scotti,” as she was known to friends and family, always sought knowledge and was an excellent student. She earned her Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in the mid-1950s. Muriel devoted her life to education. She first was a teacher at the New Jersey State Home for Girls, and then a guidance counsellor at Morris Knolls High School in Rockaway, New Jersey. Later, after marrying the love of her life, Wayne Schroeder, and moving to North Carolina, she spent over two decades at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth, where she taught computer applications.
Muriel was an adventurous traveler and visited many exotic destinations. She enjoyed exploring the land, the people and the cultures – especially, the different cuisines. Her favorite trips were those to Mexico, South America, England, Portugal, the former Yugoslavia, and her honeymoon in Trinidad-Tobago.
Her interest in the environment and animals grew throughout her life. She curated a maintained a beautiful garden at her home and was a great mother to many pets, most recently her beloved dogs Schatzie and Ikee.
Muriel attended the Holy Infant Catholic Church in Reidsville with her loving and devoted husband of almost 50 years, Wayne. She adored and was endlessly proud of her son Chris and daughter-in-law Franceska.
Muriel passed away November 7, 2018 and the family will see friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Saturday, November 10, 2018 and burial will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens in Reidsville.
