Marvin Luther Fields went home to the Lord July 26th at the age of 70. Luther was born in Greensboro, NC to Shelton and Marie (Davis) Fields. He grew up in Summerfield and was a part of the first graduating class of Northwest High School in1966. Luther graduated from Wingate with an associate degree and from Guilford College with a BA in Psychology. Luther married his wife Martha Hance Fields of 41 years in 1977. Luther enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever he had the opportunity. He was known for saying he enjoyed catching a lot more than fishing. He will be remembered by the many young adults he coached in soccer. Luther also enjoyed sports of all kinds and coached many of his children’s basketball and baseball teams. Luther was an avid NC State fan and loved attending football and basketball games. You would often find him at church dressed in his State red after a big win. Luther was a member of Sharon Baptist Church in Reidsville where he served as deacon and an usher. Those in his Sunday School class particularly enjoyed how Luther added to the class with his wit and insight. His favorite role at church was as a greeter where he enjoyed welcoming people into the worship services. Luther worked for Matteson Construction Company for many years but enjoyed retirement much more. In addition to hunting and fishing, he enjoyed running, hiking, skiing and traveling. Luther and Martha had many memories of hiking and running in states across the United States. In later life, Luther enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing with them and watching their different activities. When illness prevented him from enjoying some of his outdoor passions, he became a prayer warrior for friends and family.
