Memorial for Janie Upton Jones

Janie Upton Jones, 92, of Reidsville went home to be with the Lord early on Thursday morning, July 25, 2019.  A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, July 27 at Grace Fellowship Church (formerly First Congregational Christian), 1863 South Park Dr., Reidsville.  The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service.  The family will have a private graveside service.

She was born in Buena Vista, GA on August 23, 1926.  She graduated from high school and beautician school, before meeting her husband Herb who was in the Army stationed nearby at Fort Benning, GA.  They married in 1953 and settled in his hometown of Reidsville, NC.  Herb went to be with the Lord in 1989.

Janie had accepted Christ as her Savior early in life, and remained an active church member as long as her health allowed.  She was a giving person, and demonstrated the gift of mercy toward both people and animals in need.

She balanced the duties of a homemaking wife and mom while operating a beauty shop that was attached to the home.  She enjoyed dolls and other memorabilia, family history, and during her latter years watching the Atlanta Braves.  Earlier in life she was active in Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the ABWA.  She was a Sunday School teacher, and was active in the church Women’s Fellowship and Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Jones, her three brothers and two sisters.  She is survived by her daughter, Donna Talley and husband, Tim of Reidsville; her son Dr. Bert Jones and wife, Susan of Reidsville; three grandchildren, Brandon Talley (wife, Leslie), David and Caroline Jones; two great-grandchildren, Cora and Vivian Talley, and several nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank the staff of Highgrove Longterm Care for their years of love and care for Janie (who many there affectionately called “Mrs. J.J.”), longtime physician and friend Dr. Scott Luking, and Rockingham County Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capitol Commission NC ministry, PO Box 134, Wentworth, NC 27375 (her son Bert serves as the state chaplain at the capitol); or to the Gideons, in memory of Janie and to the glory of God.
